In this final article in the series, we pit the Stelvio Ti against Stuttgart’s finest, the Porsche Macan AWD. The results are in, and once again, the Alfa Romeo soundly trounces the competition. That’s right, head to head with Porsche’s mid size SUV offering, the Alfa Romeo completely runs away with it. Read on to see by exactly how much!

Performance

Porsche are just one of those names, synonymous with speed and performance, to the extent that if you just asked people on the street, which car is faster, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, or the Porsche Macan, you’d be comfortable betting on people answering “Porsche!”. But a quick glance at the statistics will quickly prove those people wrong. Alfa Romeo are determined to carve such a reputation for themselves, and with cars like the Stelvio on the showroom floor, it won’t be long until the tables are turned. Looking first at the horsepower; the Porsche has an output of 252 horsepower, which is pretty unremarkable given the reputation that comes with the badge! The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti is out to make a statement, with its enormous, 280 horsepower! A pretty significant gulf between the two, for sure. Even when it comes to torque, the Stelvio has the Porsche Macan running scared; the Alfa Romeo will pin you back, hard to your seat, thanks to the 306 lb-ft of torque it lays down, and once again the Porsche Macan plays second fiddle, with just 273 lb-ft. In the top speed category, the Porsche Macan Gave the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti a much better run for its money, but it still can’t quite hang, topping out at a respectable 142 mph, which just wasn’t quite enough to best the Stelvio, which stops accelerating at 144 mph. Given that the Alfa Romeo has won in each of the performance sub categories so far, it should come as no surprise that it also wins in the most common performance metric, the zero to sixty sprint; hitting sixty from a standing start in 6.7 seconds, the Porsche feels almost glacial comparted to the Alfa Romeo’s blistering time of 5.4 seconds. The hallmark of any real performance car is not just its ability to go fast, but the ability to stop quickly too. Great brakes mean you can slow down later and carry more speed into corners, more speed in the corners equals faster lap times. The Macan is outfitted with standard OEM Porsche callipers, not bad, but certainly not as effective as the all around Brembo ABS stoppers fitted to the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti! Brembo provide the ultimate in stopping power and are fitted to race cars and the worlds greatest performance vehicles alike. The final performance comparison between the Porsche Macan and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti, is the drive shaft. In most reviews and comparisons, this might not even be worth mentioning, but seeing as the the Alfa boasts a carbon fiber drive shaft, a feature rarely seen outside of mid six figure supercars, and the Porsche doesn’t, it seems that it is indeed worth bringing up! Carbon drive shafts lower the overall weight significantly, increasing the power to weight ratio, as well as reducing vibration a lot more efficiently than the steel equivalents, found on the likes of the Porsche Macan.

Exterior and Interior Design

Some of the most beautiful cars in the world have come from Italy, one of the most notable came from Alfa Romeo, the 8C. The Stelvio has this DNA running all through it. Porsche have always made good cars, but they will never be known for their beauty the way that Alfa Romeos are. The thing that makes the Stelvio so brilliant goes beyond the obvious aesthetics, take for example, the near perfect 50/50 weight distribution, a product of the overall design that actually provides a significant handling improvement, as well as a greater feeling of confidence when driving hard, a rare thing to find in an SUV.

Things keep moving in the Stelvio’s favour on the interior. You’ll find much greater comfort than in the Porsche, especially in the long, and often brutal Canadian winter, thanks largely to the heated leather seating. Why should your hands miss out on the warmth? In the Stelvio Ti, they needn’t, a heated leather steering wheel is of course standard equipment on the Alfa, and not featured on the Porsche. Additional to the heated seats and steering wheel, you’ll enjoy 4 way power lumbar support on both the driver and front passenger seats, once again, something not featured on the Macan.

The Stelvio, is not only fast, and beautiful to look at, it’s practical too, even more so than the Porsche! Boasting 18.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up, vs. 17.7 cubic feet on the Porsche, and with the seats folded, the Alfa claims 56.5 cubic feet of cargo space, compared to the 53 cubic feet available in the Porsche.

Finally, the Stelvio is fitted as standard with 19 inch wheels, compared with 18 inch rims on the Porsche Macan.

Infotainment

Alfa Romeo have truly gone all out on the infotainment features across the range, and the Stelvio Ti is really no exception. With tech features as impressive as its performance, this really is the total package. The difference between the Stelvio and the Macan in this department, is once again worlds apart. The Alfa Romeo features a 7 inch color driver information display, which positively dwarfs the comparatively miniscule 4.6 inch display on the Porsche. The radio continues the trend of impressive displays, with a huge 8.8 inch screen features on the Alfa Romeo, while the Porsche is offered with a 7 inch radio interface. Controlling the radio  and driver information is super easy in the Stelvio Ti, thanks to the intuitive rotary control knob, a feature not available in the Porsche Macan.

The biggest limitation of smart phones is of course the battery life, and Alfa Romeo recognized this, hence the placement for four USB charging ports in the Stelvio Ti, double the amount featured in the Macan AWD.

Conveniences and Safety

If you’re interested in a well equipped SUV with great features included as standard, the Stelvio Ti is one of the best options available today! The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti comes as standard with voice activation, a feature that not only provides convenient access to features like phone and radio stations, but also helps improve safety by keeping your eyes where they need to be, on the road! You’ll love the remote start feature, not only does it let you heat up the car in advance during the winter, but it also enables you to cool it down before you get in during the summer, a really nice feature that the Stelvio boasts, and the Macan does not. The Stelvio also features standard passive entry, meaning you don’t need to get your keys out in order to access the car! This is available on the Macan, but only as an optional extra.

Optional Extras and Packages

Is the 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti’s exhaustive list of standard features not quite enough for you? Don’t worry, there are still some excellent optional extras available , including forward collision warning, a system that alerts and assists in the event of a detected forward collision approaching. You can also choose to boost the Stelvio’s already stellar safety features with blind spot and cross path detection, as well as lane departure warning systems.
