The 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia: Car of The Year's Ratings and Reviews

"It was the only car that said, 'You're in charge. You want to be nice and tidy, I can be tidy. You want to be crazy and drift me wild, I'll be right there with you.You fall in love with it." - Chris Theodore, Former Ford and Chrysler product development

Voted by the experts as one of the top cars for this year, the Alfa Romeo Giulia is a passion-inducing hot Italian sedan that visually excites while providing an equally impressive and well-balanced driving experience.

Endowed with a racing pedigree from the 505-horsepower Quadrifoglio, the Giulia and its Ti (Turismo Internazionale) sport variant is Alfa Romeo's only sedan offering in the US market. This premium D-segment vehicle sits before the Stelvio crossover and 4C sports car in terms of pricing.

Engine & Pricing

"The smooth detents of the buttons, the rheostatic clicks of the dials, and the swing of the stalks all carry a tactile elegance. The italic typeface on the instrument gauges connotes velocity. The back seats, though a tad tight on legroom, are draped in the same sumptuous leather as those up front. " - Motor Trend

The Giulia and its Ti variant features a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 capable of 280 hp and 306 lb-ft of torque. This SOHC engine uses Alfa Romeo's MultiAir 2 valve technology, which features a direct-mount twin-scroll turbocharger with an electronic wastegate has a red line of only 5,500 rpm, with a max engine speed of 6,200 rpm

Meanwhile, the RWD-only Quadrifoglio boasts an all-aluminum 2.9-liter Twin-Turbo V6 that packs 505 hp and 443-lb-ft of torque.

An 8-speed automatic transmission gives the Giulia a considerably economical EPA-rating of 24/33 mpg city/highway for the RWD model, and 23/31 mpg with the AWD model while the Quadrifoglio delivers 17/24 mpg.

The Alfa Romeo Canada Giulia starts at $47,845, while the Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio starts at $89,845.

Standard 2018 features

"It handles absolutely beautifully, with light, linear sports car-like steering. "It rides like a luxury car with no impact harshness in the cabin, and it's downright quick. This is a car that puts a smile on your face. It doesn't matter whether you're sitting at a stop light, bombing down a back road, or cruising on the highway. It just wants to please." - Christian Seabaugh. Features Editor

Performance & Safety

A number of car review websites including MotorTrend agree that the Giulia bags the top spot compared  against 8 other premium sedans. It has been unanimously praised for its handling, acceleration, and comfort, and has been highly recommended to buyers looking for a "sports car with the practicality of a 4-door".

The Giulia's racing character comes out when the Dynamic Mode from the DNA selector is engaged. Drivers looking to attack challenging twisty roads will enjoy downshifting aggressively with the large aluminum paddles while the steering wheel gives them quicker turn-in's and greater feedback.

Despite this, the stability control system keeps the car in check without meddling, even as the driver pushes the car to the limit.

The Giulia also achieved the 2017 Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS for earning the highest rating of Good in all 5 crash test evaluations, and highest rating of Superior in the Front Crash Prevention Test.

The Forward Collision Warning Plus driver assist safety feature is able to alert the driver of a possible collision, for avoiding a 12 mph impact, and for reducing a 25 mph impact by 24 mph.

Alfa Romeo also includes a number of other lauded safety features in its various Packages and Equipment Groups option such as:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control Plus with full stop

  • Lane Departure Warning

  • Rear Cross Path detection

  • Automatic high-beams

  • Auto-dimming exterior mirrors

Interiors

"Between its old-school spirit and heart-skipping design and performance, the Giulia is sui generis among today's sport sedans, and I've fallen hard for its Italian charms. " - Lawrence Ulrich, The Drive

A number of reviewers called the interiors unique and Versace-esque, with styling that meets Italian expectations and complements the car's gorgeous exterior.

A two-tone Black/Ice leather interior with Dark Gray accent stitching is an option for the Giulia and its Sport variant.

The Ti's red-leather seats and dark gray oak-wood trim on the dashboard and doors are undeniably luxurious. Additionally, the Ti Lusso now comes with an optional light Walnut wood trim

The Quadrifoglio sports a built-for-speed look with its Carbon fiber interior trim, Leather and Alcantara ultra high-performance Sparco carbon fiber racing seats, Leather and Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel with accent stitching and carbon fiber inserts.
